PhD project

Europe as a role model? The History of Sustainable Tourism in the Mediterranean, 1970-2019.
Modern tourism has ambivalent effects on an economic, ecological and cultural level. Instead of considering tourism as a highly complex, cultural phenomenon of everyday life, that has influenced the western world and globalized culture like no other practice, the term tourism is often understood and used synonymously with tourism industry. The project aims to analyse transformation processes and development stages of sustainable tourism at the example of four selected locations in the northern and southern Mediterranean regions. The focus here is on the popularization or democratization of sustainable tourism, the transformation process of a niche product made suitable for the masses. How and by which actors does this development take place and what are the effects?
