Die Frage "Was sind und was sollen die Zahlen?" ist der Titel einer bedeutenden Arbeit von Richard Dedekind aus dem Jahre 1888. Knapp hundert Jahre später hat John Horton Conway dieser Frage durch seine Erfindung (oder Entdeckung?) der surrealen Zahlen eine neue Wendung gegeben. Der Gegenstand meines Vortrages ist es, die im Titel gestellte Frage so gut es geht zu beantworten, und ich werde versuchen, mich dabei sowohl an Mathematiker als auch an Nicht-Mathematiker zu wenden.

The question "What are numbers, and what should they be?" ("Was sind und was sollen die Zahlen?") is the title of an important work by Richard Dedekind from 1888. About hundred years later, John Horton Conway gave a new turn to this question by his discovery (or invention?) of the surreal numbers. I will try to answer the question asked in the title of this talk, to the best of my ability, and addressed to a large audience of mathematicians or non-mathematicians.
