Beneath Wyndham Lewis’s Praxitella – A Point in Case for an Interdisciplinary

Collaboration

The presentation will focus on the rediscovery of Atlantic City by Helen Saunders beneath Wyndham Lewis’s Praxitella during the painting pairs project at the Courtauld Institute of Art. X-ray analysis made it possible to identify a Vorticist composition beneath Praxitella. Art historical research connected a reprinted version of the work Atlantic City by Lewis’s female Vorticist colleague Helen Saunders in the magazine Blast to the painting underneath Praxitella, suggesting that it is not by Lewis. An overlay with the reprinted version and the xray shows that the painting underneath is Atlantic City, a painting that was thought to be lost. In addition to this discovery, the talk will concentrate on the collaborative work that led to this discovery between Rebecca Chipkin (conservator) and Helen Kohn (art historian).
